Painty Pals is a colouring book and drawing app aimed at a wide age range, built around one idea that sets it apart from a library of fixed templates: any photo can become a colouring page.
The photo-to-outline converter takes an image from the gallery — including a selfie — and generates a custom outline the user can adjust with a threshold control before painting. Alongside it sit ready-made templates for people who want to relax into something pre-drawn, and a blank canvas mode for free drawing with no template and no limit.
The interesting engineering is in the outline conversion: edge detection that produces a line drawing a child can actually colour inside, tuned so a single control gives usable results across wildly different source photos, all running on-device.
